To the cinema!

Image
Do you ever do something and think 'wow, I haven't done that since before the pandemic'? Well, Pedro and I went to the movies yesterday.  (And I realize saying 'go to the movies' is very American)  Pedro really wanted to see the new Thor movie (I agreed-Thor is awesome) and didn't want to wait for it to stream online. So, we looked up the nearest theater, or *cinema*.  We found one right downtown, so we decided to go for a late night showing.  I'll admit, it was a small thing that we we were really excited for once we bought the tickets. Enjoy the little things, right?

A Quick Tour of City Center

Today was Luis's last day touring with us. His flight will be taking off in the morning, so we didn't want to completely wear him out, plus Pedro and Luis were both a bit tired.  I figured we'd see the Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis, then walk through the city for however long or little as we like, and spend the rest of the day resting/packing.  We took the train to High Street, which is right by the Cathedral, so that we could walk back towards Queen Street to go back home.  Luckily, we arrived at the Cathedral just before their lunch break, and got to go inside (Pedro's first time seeing it too). The stained glass inside is very pretty, with some on display, preserved in a light box.

Oban - The Seafood Capital of Scotland

Today the Scottish weather returned.  When we woke up it was cool, overcast, and rain was in the forecast.  Our tour today had some overlapping places, but we figured they'll look different in this weather. When we got to the pick up point for our tour, we had to laugh - we had the same tour guide.  Of course, he quickly told us he'd be testing our knowledge against the rest of the people on the bus at the end since we'd be hearing some of the stories twice.

West End

Today was a lighter day to help the guys recover from all the walking yesterday.  So we started the day off right with a stop at Beefcake Cafe, our favorite.  Luis thoroughly enjoyed the freshly baked items, so we were like proud patrons.  I was also very happy with my ginger cake, even though they thought I was crazy.  Pedro thinks ginger tastes like soap. It's not his fault, he's got the genes that make his brain perceive ginger as a soap flavor. Turns out Luis has it too! Oh well, more for me.

A sunny day in Edinburgh

Our first lesson of the day for Luis: it's pronounced ed-in-bur-rah or ed-in-bruh , not ed-in-berg like Pittsburgh.

Loch Ness, Glencoe, & The Highlands

Today was our first adventure day in Scotland.  We picked out this tour from the same company we used for our Skye trip.  They also have easy day trips so that we can easily explore parts of Scotland in one day. This tour went up through Glencoe to Loch Ness and Inverness, so Luis would get to see a lot of the Highland mountains and Lochs while also hearing the stories and histories of the land.

Luis has arrived

So Pedro's brother arrived this afternoon, bringing gifts from America.  After hugs and hellos, we hauled Luis's luggage up to our living room and helped unpack.  Pedro and Luis's mom managed to neatly pack a whole bag of Cuban crackers (an old favorite of ours), homemade mango jam, allergy medicine for Pedro, and nausea medicine for me. (Medicine like that is not easily obtained here, or it's not the same.)  We also got Pedro's virtual reality set from our old apartment, so that'll be fun.  After we got Luis settled, we decided a nice place for lunch would be Lock 27, our pub just down the canal.  Simple, Scottish, close.

We have a visitor

Tomorrow we will be hosting for the first time! Pedro's brother Luis is currently on the way to Scotland. I had hoped he would get to experience the colder weather, but the summer here is still very nice,  We've only had one big heat wave just after we returned from Italy.
